📖 How to Play — Spades

The game. Four players in two partnerships. Partners sit across from each other. You and your partner try to win at least as many tricks as you bid. First team to 500 points wins; a team that falls to −200 loses.

Bidding

• Each hand you are dealt 13 cards. Starting left of the dealer, everyone bids once: the number of tricks (1–13) you think you will win, or Nil.
• Your team's contract is the sum of both partners' bids. A Nil bid stands alone: the Nil bidder must take zero tricks.
• Table rule at this table: no Blind Nil. Nil is only bid after seeing your cards.

Playing a trick

• The player left of the dealer leads the first trick. Everyone must follow suit if they can.
• Spades are trump. The highest spade wins the trick; if no spade is played, the highest card of the suit led wins. The winner leads the next trick.
• Spades may not be led until a spade has been played on an earlier trick ("spades are broken") — unless the leader holds only spades.

Scoring

• Make your contract: 10 points per bid trick + 1 point per extra trick. Each extra trick is a bag — bags pile up, and every 10 bags cost −100!
• Miss your contract ("set"): −10 points per bid trick.
• Nil: success = +100, failure = −100. If a Nil fails, the tricks the Nil bidder took count toward the partner's contract (as bags). Your partner's bid is always scored on its own.
