โ™Ÿ๏ธ Chess Tips for Beginners: 7 Tricks to Win More Games

Here's how most beginner chess games end: not with a brilliant combination, but with somebody hanging a piece and not noticing until it's gone. I know because the first rival in Chess Empire Online โ€” a cheerful squire named Pip โ€” took my queen off the board before I'd finished my coffee, and I never even saw the bishop that did it. The seven tricks below are the ones that stop that happening. None of them requires memorising an opening. All of them win games at beginner level, immediately.

Chess game in progress in Chess Empire Online โ€” chess tips for beginners

An opening taking shape against one of the Chess Empire Online rivals.

1. Fight for the Centre With Pawns

The four squares in the middle of the board are the high ground. Pieces standing there control more of the board, and pawns there cramp your opponent's whole position. Open with a centre pawn โ€” the king's pawn or queen's pawn, two squares forward โ€” and aim to get both centre pawns advanced early. It isn't glamorous. It just makes every piece you own better.

2. Knights and Bishops Out, One Move Each

Develop your minor pieces toward the centre in the first few moves, and resist moving the same piece twice while others are still asleep on the back rank. A rough order that never embarrasses anyone: knights first (they're easy to place well), then bishops, and get all four involved before you start any heroics. Every undeveloped piece is a soldier who missed the battle.

3. Castle Before Move Ten

Castling does two jobs in one move: it tucks your king behind a wall of pawns and connects your rooks. Beginners leave their king in the centre because nothing is attacking it yet โ€” and then the centre opens, everything is attacking it, and it's too late to castle because the squares are covered. Castle early, while it's boring. Boring is safe.

4. Leave the Queen at Home (For Now)

Bringing the queen out in the first few moves feels powerful and is usually a slow-motion disaster. She gets chased by pawns and knights that were developing anyway, and each chase costs you a move while your opponent gains one. The queen is a mid-game weapon. Let the minor pieces do the opening.

5. Run the 10-Second Blunder Check

This is the highest-value habit on this page, full stop. Before you touch a piece, ask one question: what is my opponent threatening? Check three things โ€” can they give check, can they capture something, are they attacking a square that matters? Ten seconds. That's it. Most beginner losses aren't caused by deep strategy; they're a free piece that a ten-second look would have saved. Do the same check in reverse after you decide your move: does anything of mine hang now?

6. Know About f7 โ€” the Weakest Square on the Board

Look at the pawn in front of each bishop, next to the king (f7 for Black, f2 for White). At the start of the game it's defended only by the king โ€” the single flimsiest square in either camp, and the target of more cheap beginner attacks than everything else combined. Attack it when you can do so safely; defend yours the moment an enemy bishop or knight starts eyeing it. Half of "how did I lose so fast?" is this square.

7. Ahead in Pieces? Trade Them Off

Counter-intuitive but true: if you've won a piece and you're up material, swapping equal pieces off the board is usually good for you โ€” each trade leaves your extra piece looming larger over a emptier board. The player who's behind wants to keep pieces on and complicate things. Don't let them. Trade pieces, keep pawns (you'll want them for promotion), and squeeze.

How to Practise Without Getting Crushed

The honest way to learn chess is losing to someone slightly better than you, repeatedly, until they're not. Chess Empire Online is built for that: a ladder of rivals who get stronger as you climb, from Squire Pip up through club-level players to master- and grandmaster-strength engines. Start at the bottom, use the blunder check on every single move, and promote yourself only when a rival stops teaching you new ways to lose. You'll be amazed how fast "slightly better than you" becomes you.
